New Plant Development Program

Plants grow in a greenhouse at The Morton Arboretum.

Create hardy, attractive trees for the future

Using the best-performing trees and shrubs from the Arboretum, scientists are able to breed new trees and shrubs suited to growing conditions in the Midwest. These plants have sought-after qualities: They are disease and pest-tolerant, can thrive in urban and suburban growing conditions, are able to tolerate a changing climate, and, of course, are beautiful.

Once these new plants have been thoroughly tested to ensure their performance and noninvasiveness, they are introduced to the commercial marketplace through Chicagoland Grows®, a partnership between the Arboretum, the Chicago Botanic Garden, and the Ornamental Growers's Association of Northern Illinois.

Support the Arboretum's New Plant Development Program and help create excellent new trees and shrubs for the future.

The Arboretum has raised $2.3 million for New Plant Development.
